Born into a beautiful world where everything is a whirlwind of love, play and discovery. While there was some foreshadowing of trials yet to come, the sheer intensity of light made it imperceptible to my young mind. Only in retrospect can I see the deeper significance of it all and just how much was lost. Those moments have become more and more precious as time goes on…
Performance Tips
At its heart, Invention 1 is about an adult reminiscing about a memory from their childhood. Start and fight to maintain the childlike wonder until the encroaching darkness forces the adult to intervene. It is the adult that restates and ends the piece. Let the moments flow into one another. They are incredibly precious, but never indulgent.
Moments (Music Gestures)
A mischievous invitation to play between a mother and her young child. (m. 1)
An escalation evoking images of tickling, chasing and laughter. (m. 10)
A repetition with the roles flipped, more precious. (m. 19)
The two voices become as one and end on a somber tone. (m. 22)
Dark foreshadowing creeps in. (m. 26)
A tug of war begins to stop the darkness from tainting this one beautiful memory. (m. 33)
Victory is achieved and slowly the darkness recedes. (m. 38)
A final, passionate restatement of cherished memory, this time landing on a hopeful tone. (m. 50)
